Grandma’s Sugar Cookies

Two eggs

1 1/2 cups of sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup of shortening

1/4 cup of milk

3 1/2 cups of flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

Cream shortening and sugar; add in eggs, vanilla, and milk.  Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; stir together with a whisk or fork.  Add together with wet ingredients until a stiff dough forms.  Place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling out.  Roll out onto floured surface to about 3/8 inch thick (using flour as necessary to prevent sticking).  Cut out with cookie cutters or drinking glass, and place on oiled or sprayed baking sheet (you can use parchment paper instead of oiling).  Sprinkle sugar on at this time if desired. Bake at 400° for 10 minutes or until very lightly browned.  Allow to cool and drizzle with the icing if desire


2 tablespoons butter

2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 to 6 tablespoons hot water

Note: Add food coloring if you want to make colored icing

Melt butter and mix with powdered sugar and vanilla; and 3 tablespoons hot water, and add the rest a little at a time until it strings from spoon in ribbons when held above bowl.
